Ant Walker and Patrick Auger are joined by The Body Lock’s newest member, Matthew Wells, to discuss the news that Nick Diaz plans to return to the UFC in early 2021.
Yesterday, Ariel Helwani of ESPN tweeted an image of Nick Diaz after a test weight cut.
UFC 257: Poirier vs. McGregor 2 is this Saturday!
Stream every fight live on ESPN+ starting from 10 pm ET.
- Main event: Poirier vs. McGregor 2
- Co-main event: Hooker vs. Chandler
Helwani stated: “This is Nick Diaz earlier today. He weighs in the 175-165 pound range, per his manager Kevin Mubenga. He just completed a 14-week diet and training regimen. This is the first time he cuts weight in approximately four years, Mubenga said. Diaz wanted to do a test cut because he is keeping a close eye on the big welterweight fights coming up. He is “100%” planning on fighting again, per Mubenga, and is targeting an early 2021 return.”
Diaz hasn’t competed since he lost a decision to Anderson Silva on January 31, 2015.
Walker questions the return of the former UFC star and asks what do fans want to see him do at this point in his career?
The panel agrees that Diaz really shouldn’t be fighting any legitimate contender and that he should be handed a “fun fight” instead.
But Walker explains that because he is such a fan-favorite and would demand a big payday, the UFC would almost certainly be willing to push him into a significant fight against a notable contender such as Jorge Masvidal.
Wells explains that the timing really couldn’t be worse for him to return considering that fans currently can’t attend shows and that the UFC couldn’t benefit from ticket sales.
Auger questions whether Diaz will actually return to the Octagon but won’t rule it out considering how desperate the UFC is for fighters right now amid the pandemic.
