The main event of UFC 196 was initially planned as Rafael dos Anjos vs. Conor McGregor for the UFC Lightweight Championship. After “RDA” pulled out from the fight due to a broken foot, Nate Diaz was called and given the opportunity to face McGregor on a little over one week’s notice. The bout took place at welterweight (170 pounds), a considerable step up from McGregor’s home at featherweight (145 pounds).
In the second round of the fight, Diaz turned the tables and punished McGregor for a lousy takedown attempt by submitting him with a rear-naked choke that will forever be etched in the memories of fight fans.
At UFC 241, Nate Diaz returns for the first time in almost three years. He’ll face Anthony Pettis, who recently enjoyed a successful welterweight debut by knocking out Stephen Thompson. Fans in the United States can watch UFC 241 on ESPN+.
