Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier play-by-play, live blog

Gilbert Burns just defeated Stephen Thompson by unanimous decision and that means the UFC 264 main event bout featuring Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier is up next.

Both fighters are in the cage.

Round one

Conor storms to the middle of the cage. Opens with a spinning back kick to the body. Leg kick from McGregor. High kick. He’s establishing kickboxing distance. Low kick now. Left hand. He’s coming after Poirier hard and fast. Another low kick. Misses with his 1-2. Poirier lands a calf kick now. Poirier connects with a strong right hand. Great fight already and we’re only one minute in.

McGregor going after the leg this time. He’s slamming the left kick into Poirier’s right leg. Again. He lands a left hand to the side of Poirier’s head. Poirier trading now and lands some hard punches. He blitzes forward and lands more hard punches. He’s tagging McGregor on the feet again. Great trade from Poirier and now he’s pushing McGregor back. He’s undoubtedly winning the boxing exchanges.

Now Poirier advances and progresses to a single-leg attempt. McGregor’s going for a guillotine choke in response but it’s not tight and he can’t keep Poirier in his guard now. Poirier is trying to posture up and get out of the choke. McGregor still holding it. Poirier escapes. Sits up. Hard elbow from Poirier on top. He’s trying to pass McGregor’s guard but McGregor maintains a strong Z-guard and then pushes away. Poirier falls back into full guard. Hard elbows from Poirier. Massive damage from top position.

McGregor’s been on the bottom for far too long and this is an outcome that only suits Poirier who is favored to pull away from McGregor as the fight goes on. Hard elbows coming from the top. More hard ground and pound. McGregor responds with an upkick. McGregor’s taking so much damage and Herb Dean is starting to watch this one very closely. The pace has been ridiculous. Poirier turns to Herb Dean and complains about McGregor holding his gloves. McGregor uses the chance to stand up. He swings a big left hand and Poirier swings a punch of his own. They both miss but McGregor rolls his ankle and seemingly snaps his shin/leg? What just happened? McGregor’s in pain. He shells up and Poirier tries to finish the fight. That’s the end of the round.

McGregor can’t continue. The doctor calls it. What an unbelievable end to what was an absolutely fantastic fight for as long as it lasted.
