The UFC travels to Uruguay for the first time on Saturday, August 10, with a fight card headlined by a Women’s Flyweight Championship bout between Valentina Shevchenko and Liz Carmouche. The UFC Uruguay live stream on ESPN+ begins at 5:00 pm ET for fans in the United States.

AdvertisementThe main event marks Shevchenko’s second scheduled title defense after she claimed the crown by defeating Joanna Jędrzejczyk in December. The 31-year-old proceeded to back that victory up with a devastating head kick knockout of Jessica Eye at UFC 238.

While the story heading into this main event clash mostly revolves around Shevchenko’s appearance as an unstoppable force in the women’s flyweight division, Carmouche, this weekend’s challenger, is one of only two women to have recorded a victory against Shevchenko in mixed martial arts – the other being two-division champion, Amanda Nunes. When Shevchenko and Carmouche first clashed all the way back in 2010, Carmouche emerged as the winner after a second-round stoppage.

They’ll now battle for a second time, this time for UFC gold.

In the co-main event of UFC Uruguay is a welterweight matchup between heavy-hitters Vicente Luque and Mike Perry.

In a recent conversation with Mike Heck from The Body Lock, UFC play-by-play commentator Brendan Fitzgerald described Luque vs. Perry as “the people’s main event.”

“We know we’re going to have a moment that night,” Fitzgerald explained. “Whatever else happens on the rest of the card, we’re going to have a moment in that fight.”

Other fights capturing the attention of UFC fans include Volkan Oezdemir vs. Ilir Latifi, Gilbert Burns vs. Aleksei Kunchenko, Cyril Gane vs. Raphael Pessoa, and Tecia Torres vs. Marina Rodriguez. UFC president Dana White described the latter two fights as ‘sleeper fights’ that fans should be looking forward to.
