ONE Championship has declared their 2017 Submission of the Year.

Five submissions made the cut, but only one could prevail.

#5 – Jomary Torres vs. Rika Ishige

Jomary Torres stunned ONE Championship fans all over the world when she submitted Rika Ishige in Macao, China, at ONE: Kings and Conquerors.

Torres, who entered as an underdog against fan-favorite Ishige, overcame the odds and strangled Ishige against the cage during round two.

It was an impressive performance by Torres, who used her powerful strikes to knock Ishige down to the mat before eventually securing the submission.

#4 – May Ooi vs. Ann Osman

“Mighty” May Ooi made a statement in her ONE Championship debut when she submitted Ann Osman in the first round.

Ooi had to overcome some adversity after Osman dropped her to the mat with a series of punches. The Singaporean survived the ground and pound of Osman before eventually working back to her feet.

Once the two stood up again, Ooi easily dragged Osman down to the mat before taking her back. It didn’t take long for Ooi to punch her left arm underneath the chin of Osman and lock up the rear-naked choke.

Ooi’s submission of Ann Osman was just one of her memorable moments in 2017. Later, she would also submit Vy Srey Khouch with ease.

#3 – Alex Silva vs. Yoshitaka Naito

Alex Silva’s first-round submission of Hayato Suzuki might be the most technically superb of any on this list.

Silva entered the contest as a significant underdog against the previously unbeaten Suzuki. Suzuki, who is regarded as one of the best wrestlers in the division, proved no match for Silva’s exquisite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

After an early Suzuki takedown, the Brazilian used his butterfly guard to sweep his opponent and land in a dominant position. Once there, the Japanese martial artist gave up an arm and Silva snatched at it quickly before executing the armbar.

“Little Rock” jumped to the top of the cage and called for his title shot.

As superb as the submission was, it didn’t compare to the highlight of Silva’s year. In December, Alex Silva dethroned Yoshitaka Naito at ONE: Warriors of the World in Bangkok, Thailand to claim the ONE Strawweight World Championship.

#2 – Bibiano Fernandes vs. Andrew Leone

Bibiano Fernandes made easy work of Andrew Leone to defend his ONE Bantamweight World Championship for the seventh consecutive time.

A devastating knee to the body dropped Leone to the mat just one minute into his title defense. Fernandes pounced at the opportunity to finish the challenger and displayed excellent control of his opponent before raining down heavy punches.

Once it was clear that Leone’s toughness would keep him in the contest, Fernandes instead opted for a submission finish and snuck his right arm underneath the chin of Leone for a rear-naked choke finish.

Bibiano Fernandes is scheduled for a bantamweight showdown with ONE Championship featherweight and lightweight champion, Martin Nguyen, in March 2018.

#1 – Angela Lee vs. Istela Nunes

Angela Lee scored yet another memorable submission when she wrapped Istela Nunes up in an anaconda choke at ONE: Dynasty of Heroes in Singapore.

Two-time Muay Thai world champion Istela Nunes proved to be quite the challenge for Lee when standing up, but once the fight hit the mat it was a completely different story.

Although Lee’s attempt at a twister submission in the first round was unsuccessful, she found her way with a tight anaconda choke in the second round.

It was the seventh submission victory in Angela Lee’s eight-fight career. The only fighter to not be submitted by Lee is Mei Yamaguchi, who is expected to battle with Lee sometime in 2018.
