“Mighty” May Ooi made it two in a row at ONE Championship by submitting Cambodia’s Vy Srey Khouch in the first round at ONE: Immortal Pursuit.
Khouch’s preferred strategy is to calmly wait for her opponent to make a mistake before retaliating with a well-timed counter punch. However, this opportunity never came against May Ooi who showed respect for Khouch’s hands by staying out of her boxing range. Ooi also never attempted to strike with Khouch and instead opted to take her down when it was possible.[srizonfbvidsingle id=1628388493851066]
Ooi’s opportunity presented itself mid-way through the first round. She lunged in with a takedown and Khouch was unable to defend it.
From there, it was only a matter of time.
May Ooi controlled Khouch easily on the canvas before eventually working to the back of her opponent and locking in a tight rear-naked choke.
After the contest, “Mighty” May Ooi gave thanks to the Singaporean fans in attendance:
“It feels amazing to be competing here in Singapore again. I’ve waited three years for this. This win is for Singapore!
She also made the most of her time with the microphone to announce that she is seeking a title shot:
“Hopefully, for an early Christmas present, I get a title shot early next year!”
After defeating Ann Osman and making short work of Vy Srey Khouch, May Ooi is definitely making a case for being one of the true contenders over at ONE Championship.
For the time being, however, she might require a couple more wins considering that she is likely placed behind Tiffany Teo in the strawweight division considering Teo’s dominant performance early in the night.
